Insulation & Air Sealing in
Wheat Ridge
Wheat Ridge has the oldest housing stock of any city we serve in the metro. The city’s own revitalization study found the large majority of its single-family homes were built between 1940 and 1979, and the median home dates from 1965. That is a city of post-war ranches, and post-war ranches are the house we fix most.

Why Wheat Ridge Homes Are Different
A city of 1950s and 60s ranches
The Carnation City grew up fast after the war, and the brick and frame ranches in Applewood, Fruitdale, Panorama Park, and Paramount Heights were built when attic insulation was a few inches of whatever was cheap and nobody sealed anything. Sixty years later those houses are solid, charming, and expensive to heat.
Post-war brick ranches
Thin attic insulation, uninsulated block or brick walls, and single-pane or early double-pane windows. Seal the attic, then bring it to depth: the first move and usually the biggest.
Crawl spaces and half basements
Many Wheat Ridge ranches sit over a crawl space or a shallow basement with an open rim joist. Encapsulating and insulating that space fixes cold floors and moisture at once.
Mid-century ductwork
Original ducts run through unconditioned attics and crawl spaces and lose a meaningful share of the heat before it reaches a register. Sealing and insulating them recovers it.
Jefferson County radon
Jefferson County Public Health reports roughly half of homes tested above the EPA action level, and slab and crawl space ranches are no exception.

Diagnostics
What we commonly find in Wheat Ridge homes
These are the patterns that show up repeatedly in this housing stock and climate. Your home gets tested, not assumed, but this is where we look first.
Attics with a few inches of 1960s insulation
Original attic insulation in these ranches is a fraction of today’s target, and in many homes the first layer has compressed to almost nothing.
Open rim joists over the crawl space
Where the floor framing sits on the foundation wall, most mid-century ranches have nothing: no insulation, no sealing, and it is the coldest edge of the house.
Leaky mid-century ducts
Sheet-metal ducts with sixty-year-old joints leak at every connection; in a crawl space or attic that means heating the outdoors.
Windows that are not the first fix
Single-pane windows get the blame, but the attic and rim joist usually lose more. We measure before recommending glass.

Local Rebates
Rebates for Wheat Ridge addresses
Wheat Ridge’s electricity and gas are both Xcel Energy, so the Xcel audit rebate (up to 60%), the insulation and air sealing rebates, the HVAC rebates, and the $600 envelope-first heat pump bonus all land here. We confirm the current amounts and file everything.
The city does not fund a home energy rebate of its own. The county’s free weatherization help is limited to manufactured and modular homes, and its 2026 application window closed in July. Power Ahead Colorado’s $1,500 metro heat pump rebate pays only through contractors the program has verified, and PowerHouse is not on that list today, so we explain it rather than promise it.

Wheat Ridge questions, answered
My 1958 Wheat Ridge ranch is cold no matter what the furnace does. Why?
Because the heat is leaving faster than the furnace can make it: a thin attic, an open rim joist, and ducts in unconditioned space. A blower door and thermal camera show the leaks in an hour, and sealing them does more for the house than a new furnace would.
Can you insulate brick walls?
Solid brick cannot take blown-in, so the strategy shifts to the attic, the rim joist, the crawl space, and careful interior details where they make sense. Frame walls behind a brick veneer can be dense-packed.
Should I encapsulate the crawl space?
If your floors are cold or the crawl space is damp, usually yes. A sealed vapor barrier, insulated foundation walls, and a sealed rim joist turn it from a leak into part of the conditioned house.
Which rebates apply in Wheat Ridge?
The Xcel set: audit, insulation, air sealing, and HVAC rebates, with Colorado’s state heat pump incentives on top. Power Ahead’s $1,500 only pays through its own verified contractors, which we are not, so we say so up front.
Is radon common in Wheat Ridge?
Very. The county health department’s figure is roughly one home in two above 4 pCi/L. A short-term test settles it, and a mitigation system fixes an elevated reading for good.
