Insulation & Air Sealing in
Windsor
Windsor grew faster than its own plan expected, and the housing shows it: 71% of the town’s homes were built since 2000 and the median house dates from 2009. That is a town of production two-stories on open ground between Fort Collins and Greeley, in a spot the weather has singled out before. We work Windsor and Severance every week.

Why Windsor Homes Are Different
Built fast, on open ground, in tornado country
On May 22, 2008, an EF3 tornado with 165 mph winds ran a 24-mile path through Windsor, damaging about 850 homes and causing $147 million in insured losses, Colorado’s costliest tornado. Most of the town’s housing has gone up since, quickly and to code minimum, and the same open ground that fed that storm feeds the everyday wind that works every gap in a house.
Production homes from the 2000s and 2010s
RainDance, Water Valley, Highland Meadows, and Jacoby Farm are mostly post-2000 two-stories: attics at the old code minimum, open top plates, bonus rooms over garages. Air sealing plus an attic top-up is the best dollar in these homes.
Two utilities, two rebate pictures
Windsor is split between Xcel Energy and Poudre Valley REA for electricity, and between Atmos and Xcel for gas. Two neighbors can have different rebates, so we confirm the address before quoting.
Open-plains wind
Nothing shelters Windsor from the west. Wind loads the windward wall and drags warm air out through the lee side, so leaks you would never notice on a sheltered lot show up as cold rooms and a furnace that never rests.
Weld County radon
Over twenty years of county test kits, Weld County has found elevated radon in about one home out of two. Age of the house has nothing to do with it.

Diagnostics
What we commonly find in Windsor homes
These are the patterns that show up repeatedly in this housing stock and climate. Your home gets tested, not assumed, but this is where we look first.
The seam at the top of every wall
The gap along the top of every interior wall is the single biggest attic leak in post-2000 Windsor homes, and sealing it is a one-day job with a measurable result.
Rim joists skipped in the field
Builders spec a sealed rim joist and field crews skip it. On 2000s and 2010s homes it tops the leak list, and nobody sees it from inside.
Air handlers in the attic
Attic-mounted air handlers give up cooling on the way to the registers; sealing and burying the duct runs in insulation gets most of it back.
Storm-loosened roof penetrations
Wind and hail loosen soffit vents, flashing, and roof penetrations, which then leak air and water. The attic side of the roof is where it shows, so we look there as well as at the shingles.

Local Rebates
Rebates for Windsor addresses
Windsor is not served by a city utility, so the Fort Collins and Loveland city programs stop at their own lines. Electric service is Xcel Energy on some streets and Poudre Valley REA on others, and the town lists both Atmos Energy and Xcel for natural gas. On an Xcel address the audit is up to 60% covered, insulation, air sealing, and HVAC each carry their own rebate, and a heat pump installed after the envelope work earns $600 more.
For Poudre Valley REA members the audit is free, a heat pump earns up to $1,500 from the co-op, and dual fuel adds $500; PVREA does not rebate insulation, so there the math runs on the energy savings alone. Atmos gas customers may qualify for Atmos programs, which we confirm for your address. We sort all of it out and file the paperwork.

Windsor questions, answered
Do you serve Severance too?
Yes. Severance shares Windsor’s utility split, Xcel or Poudre Valley REA for electricity and Xcel gas for most locations, and the same production-era housing. Everything on this page applies there.
Why do my neighbor and I get different rebates?
Because Windsor is split between utilities. One block can be Xcel and the next Poudre Valley REA, and the gas line can be Atmos or Xcel. Your bills tell us which programs you qualify for, and we check before the quote.
My 2012 house has a bonus room nobody can keep warm. Is that normal?
It is common and it is fixable. Rooms over garages lose heat through a floor cavity that was never fully insulated or air sealed. We open that cavity, seal it, insulate it, and the room joins the rest of the house.
Is there anything left to fix on a newer home?
Usually three things: the rim joist, the attic top plates, and the attic hatch. A blower door shows exactly how much air the house leaks, and sealing those spots moves the number more than people expect.
How serious is radon in Windsor?
Weld County’s own testing shows about half of homes elevated. Radon comes from the soil, so a tight new home can read higher than an old drafty one. Test first; mitigation is reliable.

Severance, CO
Xcel Energy or Poudre Valley REA for electricity and Xcel gas for most locations, the same split as Windsor. An old sugar beet station incorporated in 1920 that has grown to about 11,500 people, almost all of it in post-2000 subdivisions.
